Cleveland Indians Are Changing Their Name

The Cleveland Indians are changing their name amid pressure from outside groups that the name is offensive to Native Americans. The team is expected to make the official announcement sometime this week.

According to ESPN's Jeff Passanthe Indians are working out the details of changing their name and logo. The team is considering multiple options, including keeping the name for the upcoming season while transitioning to their new name. Team officials have not decided on their new name and may follow in the footsteps of the Washington Football Team and use a placeholder nickname for 2021 before unveiling a new logo and uniform in 2022.

While the team hasn't settled on a new name, several options being floated around include the Cleveland Spiders, Naps, or Rocks.

The move comes just two years after the team began phasing out its cartoon mascot Chief Wahoo.

Cleveland's baseball team has been known as the Indians since 1915.
