President Trump Blasts Democrats As Government Shutdown Enters Third Day

After Congress failed to reach an agreement to open the government over the weekend President Trump continued to cast the blame for the shutdown on the Democrats. In two tweets Monday morning, Trump accused the democrats of shutting down the government to appease their base.

In his first tweet, Trump said "The Democrats are turning down services and security for citizens in favor of services and security for non-citizens. Not good!"

In his second tweet, he said the Democrats don't want to shutdown the government, but are powerless:

Democrats have shut down our government in the interests of their far left base. They don’t want to do it but are powerless!

The early morning tweets come as the Senate has a vote scheduled for noon on Monday to temporarily fund the government. The funding would last for three weeks, giving the Republicans and Democrats time to work on a long-term spending bill and an immigration reform bill. The Democrats have refused to agree to fund the government unless the deferred action for childhood arrivals program is renewed. The Republicans are split on renewing the program, which shielded undocumented children from deportation. Some Republicans are completely against the program, which they consider a form of amnesty, while others are willing to renew it under certain conditions, such as fully funding the border wall and eliminating the visa lottery and chain immigration.
